Fire Abatement Deadlines in Riverside County: What Homeowners Need to Know

September 1, 2026

If you own property in Riverside County, fire abatement isn't optional — it's the law. Every year, the Riverside County Fire Department and Cal Fire require property owners to create defensible space around structures. Deadlines are strict, and non-compliance can result in fines. Here's what you need to know.

What Is Defensible Space?

Riverside County's fire abatement regulations require 100 feet of defensible space around all structures. The first 30 feet is the "lean, clean, and green" zone — dead vegetation must be removed, trees must be limbed up at least 6 feet from the ground, and spacing between trees and shrubs should prevent fire from jumping between them. The remaining 70 feet is the "reduced fuel zone," where vegetation should be thinned and maintained.

When Are Deadlines Enforced?

The enforcement season typically begins in late spring, with the Riverside County Fire Department sending inspectors out to properties starting in May. If your property is found to be non-compliant, you'll receive a notice giving you a short window — often 30 days or less — to bring the property into compliance. If the work isn't done, the county can hire a contractor to do it and bill you, along with a hefty administrative fine.

Don't Wait for the Notice

For property owners with large lots, steep terrain, or heavy vegetation, meeting the deadline can be overwhelming. That's where professional help matters. A tree service experienced in fire abatement can quickly assess your property, identify what needs to go, and handle the removal safely and efficiently. This includes removing dead trees, limbing up branches, thinning dense canopy, and clearing brush and debris.

The key is to start early. Don't wait for the notice to arrive. If your property hasn't been cleared this year, or if you've recently acquired a property that's overgrown, schedule an inspection now. Fire abatement work done in the spring is faster, cheaper, and less stressful than work done under a compliance deadline.
